“Anyone, then, who knows the good he ought to do and doesn’t do it, sins.”   James 4:17

In the fall of 2004, I knew “the good” I “ought to do” – open a shelter for homeless women and their children.

“Homeless children are confronted with stressful and traumatic events that they often are too young to understand, leading to severe emotional distress. Homeless children experience stress through constant changes, which accumulate with time. These stressful changes result in a higher incidence of mental disorders, which become manifested in homeless children’s behavior. Despite significantly more incidences of mental illness, less than one-third of these children receive professional help.”  (A Report Prepared for the Family Housing Fund, December 1999)

I would like to recognize those who throughout the years have given their time, talents, and resources to support our organization’s efforts to serve homeless women and their children.
  • Ed Brown, CPA, helped me through the process of incorporating and receiving 501(c)3 status with the IRS.  He prepares and files all of our government reports.
  • Laura Baareman created and maintains our web site and Facebook page.
  • Riverwatch Self-Storage provides storage for our thrift store donations.
  • My Board of Directors gives me wise counsel, support, and help through the difficult times.  They assist with our special events and give many hours.
  • Churches, Sunday school classes, and individuals send a check each and every month.
  • Volunteers help me keep our thrift store in business.
  • Virginia Summerall writes the checks, keeps accurate records, and handles the processing and mailing of our newsletter.
  • Mike Armstrong gives presentations to church groups and civic organizations and does interviews on television and radio.
  • The Border Bash Foundation gives us grants.  Mike Armstrong and Tommy Rogers are our advocates with the foundation.
  • We have received four grants from the Masters Golf Tournament.  The Community Foundation of the Central Savannah River Area manages these funds.
  • InkBoy Ink & Toner Outlet prints our newsletters.
  • Tom Johnson processes and mails our newsletters.
  • WRDW - News 12 includes Julie’s House in their “Time to Care” promotion every January and their “Family Fair” every spring.
  • The good citizens of our community donate many, many items for our thrift store.

A huge and heartfelt “thank you” to those who have so generously helped me keep Julie’s House afloat since 2005!  I apologize if I have inadvertently missed someone!

Ben Belding, owner of Belding Construction Company, donated a cargo container for storage at our thrift store.  Thank you, Ben!  It is a huge help in managing our big inventory of donated items.

I have decided to discontinue this newsletter and put my time and efforts into writing grants and managing Julie’s House and Making Ends Meet Bargain Center.  We will communicate on our web site - www.julies-house.org - and our Facebook page - Making Ends Meet Bargain Center - Julie’s House Thrift Store.

God bless!

“Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before.”  Phil 3:13

Happy New Year!

We are “reaching forth unto those things which are before” for Julie’s House in the New Year and ask that you prayerfully consider supporting our ministry.

December 1st our Board Members, volunteers, staff, and their guests enjoyed a delightful Christmas Party at Harbor Inn Restaurant.   Thank you, Virginia Summerall, for the very special party favors and, Peggy Mitchell, for the gorgeous table decorations!

A group of students from Westminster High School volunteered a day of service at Making Ends Meet Bargain Center January 5th. It was our pleasure to work with these fine young people and they did a superior job for us.   Latoya Hardman was our contact person for the group.  Thank you!

The good citizens of our community responded in a huge way to the Time to Care “Clean House” promotion sponsored by WRDW – TV News 12.  Our showroom is very, very full of donated items and we have lots to spare. Thank you, Mark Hodges, for being so generous and giving us great air time!  Mark is Marketing/Promotions Manager for Channel 12.  Mike Armstrong did an interview with Meredith Anderson on Midday on 12. Thank you, Mike and Meredith!  Mike Armstrong and Mike Askew helped receive donations January 19th.  Thanks!

Mrs. Mae Wong donated shelves, display cases, and many other items to our thrift store. Mercy Ministries helped transport the items to our store. Fran Oliver is Executive Director of Mercy Ministries.  Thank you, Mrs. Wong and Mercy Ministries.   Mike Armstrong, Rhonda Whiting,   and  William Donnelly assisted. Thank you, very much, Mike, Rhonda, and William for the help!

The Junior League of Augusta is sponsoring a fundraiser – “Little Black Dress Initiative” – and the proceeds will be donated to Julie’s House.  Read the details on the reverse side of this newsletter.   Angela Ryder is the spokesperson with the Junior League.  Thank you, Angela!  Mike Armstrong gave a presentation on behalf of Julie’s House at a Junior League Meeting.  Thank you, Mike!

We are advertising our thrift store on WKZK Radio – 103.7 FM and 1600 AM and WYBO Radio – 929 FM.  Thank you, Mike Armstrong, for doing an interview for us on these stations!

So many people to thank!

“Do you know what the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population is?  Families with children. About two-fifths (41 percent) of the homeless population is made up of families, making family homelessness a growing phenomenon.”  www.huffingtonpost.com, June 7, 2016

JUNIOR LEAGUE OF AUGUSTA FUNDRAISER
The Junior League of Augusta, Georgia will kick off its 2nd Annual Little Black Dress Initiative February 6-10, 2017 to raise awareness around poverty surrounding women in crisis. Our league has found an ideal fit and partnership to collaborate and incorporate our focus. We will seek to raise awareness for Julie’s House, which provides resources for women in crisis, while raising funds to both share with Julie’s House and our very own Community Programming. At the end of the week, JLA will also make a donation of our dresses and outfits to fill a closet for the women residents. Women in crisis often come to Julie’s House seeking refuge with nothing. They leave their situations and most often come without any other clothing or possessions.

“And this is the testimony; God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” 1 John 5:11

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”  2 Corinthians 9:15

There is no greater gift than the gift of “eternal life!”

We were blessed with lots of help at our thrift store September 24th.  Augusta University held their annual “Day of Service” and sixteen of their students, staff, and faculty members volunteered their services at Making Ends Meet Bargain Center.  Vicky Medlock was our contact person and coordinator.  Thank you, Augusta University and Vicky!

Also, Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church held a work party September 24th and six of their members assisted us at our store.  Cheryl Wilson was their spokesperson.  Thank you, members of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church and Cheryl!

Making Ends Meet Bargain Center opened for business November 28, 2008, with 1,000 sq. ft. of showroom space.  We now occupy 6,000 sq. ft.  In addition to generating income to sustain our shelter, it serves as a resource center for low-income families.  We have given clothes and household items to many needy families.  Join us for our “8th Anniversary Celebration and Sale” Friday, November 25th.  Bar-b-que sandwich combos will be available from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.   Tickets are $5.00 and may be purchased at Making Ends Meet Bargain Center, from any board member, or at the door.  Join us for fun, fellowship, and lots of incredible bargains!

The cookbook that we published - “Recipes from the Heart” - is still available.  It contains 400 delicious recipes submitted by friends and family, is a loose-leaf binder, and is a wonderful Christmas gift.  The price is $15.00 and may be purchased at our thrift store.

Board members, volunteers, and staff are invited to our annual Christmas Party at Harbor Inn
Restaurant, 3404 Wrightsboro Road.  The date is Thursday, December 1st and the time is 7:00 P.M. Please RSVP no later than November 18th – 706-836-2781.

  • “Today 1 in 4 children under the age of 18 – a total of about 17.4 million – are being raised without a father,” U.S. Census Bureau – Table C2
  • “Single mothers are more likely to be poor than married couples.  The poverty rate for single-mother families in 2013 was 39.6%, nearly five times more than the rate (7.6) for married-couple families.”  National Women’s Law Center, Poverty & Income Among Women & Families, 2000-2013
I am often asked “how can I help?”  We need volunteers to help at our thrift store, more customers to shop at our thrift store, and monthly monetary donations.  We appreciate any help!

Thanksgiving and Christmas blessings and best wishes to you and your family!

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”  2 Chronicles 7:14

Our Annual Independence Day Celebration and Sale exceeded all expectations!!  Everything was donated for our food concession and we made $493.00.  The list of donors and volunteers is very long so I will say a huge and heartfelt “thank you” to all!

Julie’s House participated in the annual “Time to Care Family Fair” Saturday, May 21st, at Augusta Common.  This event is sponsored by WRDW – TV News 12. Our Board of Directors
“manned” our booth and Virginia Summerall, our Board Treasurer, provided games and prizes for the children.  Thank you, WRDW – TV News 12, Board of Directors, and Virginia!  I enjoy attending this event each year.

Bonnie Lawson and her husband, Don, and children, Molly and Jack, have been long-time supporters of our ministry.  They appealed to their neighbors for donations of paper products, household cleaning products, and left-overs from yard sales.   They have delivered many, many SUV loads to us.  Thank you, Lawson family!

Saturday, August 6th, and the first Saturday of each month, all Augusta, Aiken, and surrounding area NPC owned Pizza Hut Restaurants will donate 20% of your purchase to Julie’s House when you present this Pizza Hut Fundraiser Flyer/Voucher.  You can either print it from the link or you may stop by Making Ends Meet Bargain Center and pick them up.  Please take your family out for pizza and help us raise funds for Julie’s House.

“When a woman decides to leave an abusive relationship, she often has nowhere to go. This is particularly true of women with few resources. Lack of affordable housing and long waiting lists for assisted housing mean that many women and their children are forced to choose between abuse at home and life on the streets. Approximately 63% of homeless women have experienced domestic violence in their adult lives.” National Network to End Domestic Violence

“Between 50-70% of men who abuse their partners also abuse their children.”  U.S. Department of Justice

“A child’s exposure to his father abusing his mother is the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.”  Report of the American Psychological Association Presidential Task Force on Violence and the Family. APA, 1996

AND THE CYCLE OF VIOLENCE GOES ON AND ON - FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT!

Julie’s House offers shelter to homeless women and their children and approximately 50% of our clients are homeless due to domestic violence.  I receive referrals on a regular basis from our local domestic violence shelter when they have no space or the client has reached her maximum days of shelter at their facility.

Pray and vote November 8th!

“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”   Proverbs 31:8

I “speak up” for homeless children “who cannot speak for themselves.”  I do not need statistics to tell me that there is a tremendous need in the CSRA for additional bed space for homeless women and their children.  I receive several phone calls almost every day from desperate women and can hear their children in the background.  Saying “we have no space” is very difficult. I listen to their stories and refer them to other shelters – usually in other towns if they have transportation.  Julie’s House does not have the resources or enough support to fully address the need.  We do the best that we can.  Please shop and/or volunteer at our thrift store, tell your friends about our ministry, be our advocate with your church or civic organization, and give a few dollars.

“Homelessness influences every facet of a child’s life – from conception to young adulthood. A review of a well-established body of research on childhood homelessness reveals a profound and accumulative negative effect on the development of children, leading many to repeat the cycle of homelessness as adults.  Homelessness inhibits the physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and behavioral development of children.”  (A report prepared for the Family Housing Fund, December 1999, By Ellen Hart-Shegos, Hart-Shegos and Associates, Editor:  Anne Ray)

AND THE CYCLE OF HOMELESSNESS GOES ON AND ON - FROM ONE GENERATION TO THE NEXT!

A ladies group from North Augusta Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints donated “birthday bags” for the women and children at our shelter.  Each bag contained the “makings” for a birthday cake, candles, and a card.  What a unique and sweet idea.  Thank you, ladies!

Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church ladies donated lots of paper and cleaning products for our shelter.  Thank you, ladies, for your kindness and support!

Our Making Ends Meet Bargain Center Annual Independence Day Celebration and Sale will be Saturday, June 25th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.  We will have our usual fantastic bargains and food concession. A hot dog with chili, coleslaw, and all the condiments; drink; and chips will be $5.00.  Tickets are available from our Board Members, at the thrift store, and the day of the event.

Julie’s House will be participating in the annual “Time to Care Family Fair” Saturday, May 21st, at Augusta Common from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  This event is sponsored by WRDW – TV News 12 and the public is invited.  There will be food vendors, entertainment, inflatables, and games for the children.  Thank you, Channel 12 and staff, for including our ministry in your awesome event and for your kindness and generosity throughout the years.

This year’s newsletters are Volume XII.  I wrote the first newsletter twelve years ago.  I have many supporters that have been on board from day one and Julie’s House could not have survived without them.  A huge “thank you” to all of them!

God bless America!
